The officers were lucky they weren’t fatally stabbed or knocked unconscious as they backed from the suspect. They should have kept a greater distance, especially as things began to escalate.
The better tactic would have been to step sideways because it’s harder for a charging knife-wielding suspect to re-adjust and turn. By stepping sideways, this allows the officer a couple of more brief seconds to either draw his handgun or to escape the kill zone.
