The
characteristics of a virtuous woman are both easily, and not easily
described in words. Some may say that a virtuous woman is merely one who
observes a certain degree of chaste behavior in situations except for
those which pertain to her marital bed. Others may consider a virtuous
woman one who stalwartly tackles all of the challenges faced by a woman
at any given time. She may be a devoted
mother, wife and housekeeper. She may also be a woman who works
incredibly hard to accomplish the various tasks of her life. In general
the characteristics of a virtuous woman can be accounted for by
measuring her sense of self worth, and inner strength. Elizabeth I of
England has been touted as being an incredibly virtuous woman. She never
married or had any children, so her virtuous characteristics came from
her ability to lead a nation and to build it back up after intense
religious conflicts, and warring with neighboring countries. Because she
was a queen, Elizabeth's personality can only be guessed at based on
writings that described her. While most of these documents were focused
on her beauty and striking appearance, many also told tales of her
fierce determination as a ruler. Her refusal to take a husband, lest she
be placed under the control of a man in a very patriarchal time period,
shows that she had the inner strength to balk against the confines of
society. Modern women have much more of an opportunity to demonstrate
virtuous qualities, because they are in most societies freer to be as
they like. It is vitally important for women, particularly young women
to seek out role models who exhibit the characteristics of a virtuous
woman. It is by the example of historical figures such as Elizabeth I,
and hopefully some modern day equivalent, that the women of today and
tomorrow will learn to be virtuous themselves. For more information,
