A mother and son who spent 30 minutes inside a submerged SUV on Wednesday after it went into an Aurora retention pond died over the weekend, police said.
Aurora Police Department spokesman Dan Ferrelli said the victims, identified as Maria Ramirez, 31, and Ronaldo Alanis-Ramirez, 9, of Aurora, had been in critical condition for days before they died at separate suburban Chicago hospitals.
Maria Ramirez died around 11 p.m. Saturday at Delnor Community Hospital in Geneva. Ronaldo died just before noon Sunday at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, police said.
Because the investigation remains ongoing, police have not released new details about the crash.
