The Illinois House on Tuesday rejected Mayor Rahm Emanuel's request to put off a massive teacher pension payment that’s due at the end of the month.
Shortly after the 53-46 House vote, with 71 votes needed for passage, finger pointing quickly began over who was to blame for the defeat of a proposal that was the result of talks between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Emanuel.
Democrats under House Speaker Michael Madigan, who control the chamber, blamed Rauner for failing to provide enough Republican votes to secure the measure’s passage. Rauner allies accused Madigan of double dealing, contending it was a show of pique because the veteran speaker was not part of the original negotiations.
