The New York Giants' Jason Pierre-Paul, 26, reportedly had his right index finger amputated in Florida on Wednesday, according to medical records obtained by ESPN. The defensive end remains hospitalized for treatment to injuries on both of his hands following a Saturday fireworks accident.
Meanwhile, Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback C.J. Wilson, 25, reportedly lost two fingers to fireworks, his father told a local Charlotte, North Carolina, television station. His agent confirmed to ESPN that Wilson had suffered an injury, but would not discuss the details of its nature, though a team source described it as "significant."
Pierre-Paul is expected to recover, but the injury could damage his career. On Tuesday, the Giants pulled a $60 million multi-year deal off the table after concerns were raised about his long-term health, the NFL Network reports.
Team officials flew down to Florida to survey the extent of the injury, but were denied a visit with the ailing Pierre-Paul, according to ESPN.
The star football player, who is designated a franchise player with the team (meaning he's a player the team hopes to build a franchise around for the future), is not technically under contract with the Giants because he has not yet signed his one-year franchise tender. Pierre-Paul has until July 15 to make a long-term deal with the team.
