Six children on a roller coaster hit their heads when a roller coaster at the carnival in the 8800 block of South Lafayette Avenue came to an abrupt stop about 3:30 p.m., said Officer Kevin Quaid, a police spokesman. The parent of a seventh child who was not on the ride asked that that child also be taken to the hospital, Quaid said.
About 4 p.m., fire officials called an EMS Plan One alert in the 200 block of West 87th Street, meaning at least five ambulances were sent to the scene.
Two children were taken in fair condition, and two were taken in good condition to Comer Children's Hospital. Three others were taken in good condition to St. Bernard Hospital, according to a Chicago Fire Department spokesman.
