The warrant has been issued for Robbie M. Patton who authorities said opened fire at a party in the 300 block of East Green Street in Champaign at about 12:38 a.m. on Saturday. He is wanted on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm.
Twenty-two-year-old George Korchev, an innocent bystander, was shot while walking by the party and taken to Carle Foundation Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:02 a.m. Gunfire also broke out at 1:08 a.m. in the 700 block of South State Street where police found another gunshot victim.
Three men, all innocent bystanders, were injured in the Green Street shooting but none received life-threatening injuries. Those injured include a 20-year-old man from Champaign and two 22-year-old men from Champaign. They have all since been discharged from the hospital.
A 25-year-old Urbana woman sustained a gunshot wound to the leg in the South State Street shooting. She has also been discharged from the hospital.
A pedestrian, who has been identified as a 19-year-old woman from Round Lake, was fleeing the gunfire when she struck by a car on East Green Street. She received minor injuries and has been released from the hospital.
“Due to the proximity and timing of the State St. shooting, we could not rule out the possibility that the two shootings may be related,” police said during a Wednesday morning press conference. “However, as the Green St. investigation has progressed, we have found no credible information at this time to confirm the incidents are related.”
Korchev, a 2012 graduate of Mundelein High School, recently passed his Nursing Board Exam. He had been working as a patient care tech at Advocate Condell and was expected to start as a full-time nurse this past week.
