A California sheriff's deputy was critically wounded after a man armed with "an assault-like rifle" opened fire on cops responding to a domestic disturbance call Thursday evening, police said.
The alleged gunman, 38-year-old Jose Torres, was shot and killed by another Merced County sheriff's deputy after opening fire just before 6 p.m. outside a home in Delhi, a small town some 100 miles east of San Francisco, the Modesto Bee reported.
The injured deputy was airlifted to an area hospital where he was in critical but stable condition late Thursday.
"He's expected to pull through," Merced Sheriff Vern Warnke said. "Keep positive thoughts, and keep my deputy in your thoughts and prayers."
Cops would not immediately comment on the number of shots fired during the dramatic exchange.
The injured cop is a 10-year department veteran, according to Sheriff Vern Warnke.
Police taped off a large portion of the residential neighborhood where the shooting happened and asked residents to stay out of the area as investigators scoured the scene for evidence.
Local resident Edgar Nieto saw the deputy getting put on a gurney.
"There were other officers, multiple officers around him and he was waving at someone," the 22-year-old told the Modesto Bee.
