A former Chicago deputy police chief was shot during an attempted robbery and returned fire, wounding the attacker Wednesday morning in the South Chicago neighborhood, sources said.
The shootings happened shortly after 9:30 a.m. near 81st Street and Essex Avenue, according to Officer Nicole Trainor, a Chicago police spokeswoman.
The former deputy chief, 73, was shot in the shoulder and opened fire on the robber, a 21-year-old man, hitting him, sources said.
The retired officer was walking with a friend when someone held them up at gunpoint, the sources said.
