Dabney Montgomery, ex-Tuskegee Airman and Martin Luther King Jr. bodyguard (Failed Bodyguard as King was shot & killed), dead at 93

Dabney Montgomery, who was a member of the famed Tuskegee Airmen and served as a bodyguard to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., died Saturday morning at his home. He was 93.

Montgomery, who served with the legendary black Army Air Corps unit from 1943 to 1945 in Southern Italy as a ground crewman, passed away peacefully of natural causes, his family said.

In March 1965, he served as one of King’s bodyguards in the historic civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Ala.

“This man’s legacy is something that we are still getting to know who he is,” said his wife of 44 years, Amelia, 74, on Saturday afternoon. “There’s just so must history behind this man.”
