The shooting brought the number of homicides in Chicago this year to at least 600, an increase of 190 compared with the same period last year, according to data compiled by the Tribune. The number of people shot in the city this year is more than 1,000 above last year at this time, according to the data.
The shooting in West Englewood occurred about 8:50 p.m. when several people walked up to a front yard in the 6700 block of South Winchester and fired as many as 40 shots, according to police and neighbors.
A man in his 20s was shot in the head and pronounced dead on the scene, police said. A 13-year-old boy was shot several times in the right thigh and went to Comer Children's Hospital; a 23-year-old man was shot in the left leg and taken to Stroger Hospital; a 30-year-old man was hit in the buttocks and leg and also taken to Stroger; and a 34-year-old man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with gunshot wounds to the leg, shoulder and right hand.
