Officers responded to a domestic-related call of shots fired in the 800 block of North Wolcott Avenue just after 5 p.m., a police spokesman said.
That led to a barricade situation that lasted until 10 p.m., when SWAT officers entered the building and found a man and a woman dead inside.
They were identified as Loretta Purcell, 82, and Christopher Kelly Purcell, 58, who lived in the same block where they were found dead, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Police said they were conducting a homicide investigation but released no other details.
