A person shot himself in the head after exchanging gunfire with police in Aurora on Tuesday night, authorities said.
About 8:40 p.m., officers stopped a vehicle near the intersection of North Avenue and Fourth Street, according to a news release from a city spokesman. A male whose age was not immediately available ran from the stopped vehicle, and an officer pursued him.
They began to shoot at each other, according to the release.
After the shootout, the person was found in a backyard in the 200 block of South LaSalle Street, where he shot himself in the head, according to the release.
He went to a hospital in Aurora, then was airlifted to a suburban hospital with a wound described as “life-threatening.”
A weapon was found at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
