Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is running for re-election as mayor of Chicago and he's doing it nimbly, with stunts and tricks.
He's scrambling to outpace his critics on the angry left by cleaving to Latinos and picking a fight with President-elect Donald Trump over "sanctuary cities."
And there was that oh-so-syrupy "Chicago Radio Town Hall Meeting," starring Emanuel and moderated by iconic anchorman Bill Kurtis, on dozens of radio stations the other night.
That should tell you too.
"I was flying home across the lake and looking out of our airplane window at our beautiful skyline," Kurtis began, "you can see 44 new buildings going up, cranes everywhere, the biggest building boom in Chicago history. Oh yes, the Cubs just won the World Series. We've got some things to celebrate. How do you feel about all of that?"
What politician wouldn't love such demanding journalism?
But if you were listening in your car, alone and without a sick bag, you were in serious difficulty.
It was a Rahm infomercial, an embarrassment even to fake journalism. The mayor ordered a dessert so cloyingly sweet that I hope it didn't trigger diabetic comas across Chicago.
