After a 2003 night out drinking in the Boystown area, theater director Brad Nelson Winters kissed a friend good night, put it in a cab and stopped at a convenience store near his apartment to buy cigarettes, friends say.

No one ever heard from the up-and-coming theater director again.

After he didn't show up at his job at Northwestern University, Winters was found dead in his bloodied apartment two days later with stab wounds to his naked, decomposing body. The 38-year-old had also been strangled.

On Friday, more than 13 years later, authorities alleged Winters was killed by Ramon Smith, a laborer now living in Dallas who has an extensive criminal history with convictions for aggravated robbery, assault, prostitution and theft.
