After bidding the group good night and starting his trip home to Naperville, gunfire erupted and 73-year-old Allen was fatally shot at about 2:20 a.m. Friday as he drove in the 1300 block of North Laramie Avenue, across the street from LaFollette Park, Chicago police said. Allen crashed into two parked cars and was pronounced dead at the scene about 25 minutes later, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said.
Detectives said they do not know if Allen, a social activist in DuPage County, was the intended target of the shooting.
The slaying shook DuPage County law enforcement professionals, who knew Allen through the Unity Partnership outreach group he founded to foster trust and goodwill between police and county residents.
