As usual, I spent my day in the farm harvesting vegetables and cutting grasses for Granny's goats. Granny had goats and poultry which she rears at home, her livestock were usually sold during the festive seasons.
After the days work, I arranged the freshly cut grasses and tied them up with a rope. Granny had told me to bring home some vegetables for dinner, I wrapped some vegetables in a black nylon and held it with my right hand while I dragged the grasses on the ground. I met my uncle on my way home, he was coming back from the garage. He stopped when he saw me, and helped put the grasses in his car boot.
"Are we having vegetables for dinner" uncle asked as he moved the car.

Uncle doesn't like vegetables, he only likes them with either Egusi or Ogbongo soup because vegetables makes him stool. "Naughty you, I miss Mariam's cooking" he said smiling "What! Maryam is a terrible cook, what do you miss?" I asked. "Her special recipes" he replied laughing Maryam is Uncle's second child. Uncle relocated to Abeokuta after the death of his wife, she died in a car accident. Uncle's wife was returning from work, when a car driving at high speed ram into her car which summersaults, she died before getting to the hospital. Uncle left his job in Lagos, and opened a garage where he repairs cars in Abeokuta. He has since dedicated his life to taking care of his children Kareem and Maryam. "Uncle, I want to ask you some questions" I said "OK Dear" He replied "Why is Grandpa refusing me from going to the university?" I asked adjusting my seatbelt "Hiqmat, Grandpa is scared you'd leave him just like your mother" Uncle said "My mother is dead" I said trying to remind him "and am not dying anytime soon" I assured him. "I know, there's a lot of things you aren't aware of" he paused "Grandpa is only trying to protect you the only way he knows" He added. "Grandpa isn't going to protect me by not sending me to the university, what is he protecting me for and why?" I asked "Hiqmat, you're too young to understand anything. You will be sixteen in a few weeks." He said "What did she say twenty years ago?" I asked "She went to the university twenty years ago,she wanted to be an architect too but…" He paused "But what?" I asked "It's a long story dear, Grandpa doesn't want history to repeat itself" He said giving me "don't worry" look. "If Grandpa doesn't want me in the university, I can attend a polytechnic and also change my course" I said and my Uncle shook his head. "As time goes by, you will understand why Grandpa is doing this. You should be able to go to the university when everything is settled" he said "Give Grandpa sometime, meanwhile do not forget to remind him whenever you are alone with him" he said alighting from the car, we were home already. At dinner, Grandpa told me to get registered for a vocation. I wasn't impressed about his decision, I didn't want Grandpa getting angry again. "What do you want to learn?" he asked "Software development" I replied "Good choice, was thinking you will opt for Fashion Designing" he murmured as he took a bite from the meat in his plate of soup. Every young girl in my neighborhood were either a Fashion Designer or a Hairstylist. Granny had a sewing machine and I have learnt a lot from her over the years. "Get registered as soon as possible" he said. I choose software development because of my passion for architecture. I needed to prepare myself for the university, I wasn't going to give up on my dreams. I read books on architecture where software development and engineering were mentioned. I choose software development because of my passion for architecture. I needed to prepare myself for the university, I wasn't going to give up on my dreams. I read books on architecture where software development and engineering were mentioned.
I held my mother's picture as i walked around my room, trying to understand what has been happening. Everyone has been saying different things, from Grandpa talking about my mother's mistake to Granny saying no one should pay for another sin and Uncle who said Grandpa is trying to protect me.
" What happened twenty years ago?" I asked the picture in my hands "What is Grandpa trying to protect me from?" I asked knowing the picture can't answer my questions.
I needed answers to my questions, going to the university was what I wanted the most. My dreams of becoming an architect, building beautiful structures and making my grandparents proud. As I thought about everything, I decided I was going to find out whatever it was my mother did twenty years ago and what was Grandpa protecting me from.
