The four killed over the weekend mark a total of 203 homicides in Chicago so far this year, up from 175 homicides in the same time frame last year, according to an analysis of a Chicago Tribune database on homicides and shootings. A total of 1,187 people have been shot in Chicago so far this year, also up from 1,045 people shot in the same time period last year.
Those dead include 21-year-old James Jones, who family members said was killed Saturday afternoon while shielding his mother from gunfire in South Chicago.
Jones and his mother, Alicia Jones, were on a porch in the 8400 block of South Colfax Avenue when a gunman approached from a gangway and opened fire, according to family and police.
