and looking for victims of Homosexual Serial Killer John Wayne Gacy from 30 years ago.
The move was requested in a letter sent to Visa and MasterCard by Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart, who cited the number of pimps and sex traffickers believed to be peddling sex there through adult escort ads placed for as little $5. Law enforcement investigations have found that ads on the site also traffic in minors.
In a news release issued Tuesday, Dart criticized Backpage for having "lowered the barrier" for sex traffickers and johns by giving them easy access to one another and fueling the sex trade.
"I am calling on Visa and MasterCard to do the right thing — defund this criminal enterprise," Dart said in a statement that went out before MasterCard announced its decision.
