Latasha Banks Hall sat near a Bronzeville playground on the morning of the Fourth of July, her back to the climbing bars. She buried her face in her hands, drowning out the squeals of a little girl who swooped down a large slide behind her.
"My baby's gone. My baby's gone. My baby's gone," she repeated between heavy sobs.
More than 100 people gathered around her at Hadiya Pendleton Park to pray for Hall's son, Vonzell Banks, a 17-year-old shot while playing basketball at the playground Friday afternoon. The park is named for a King College Prep High School student who was fatally shot in 2013, in another park about a mile from President Barack Obama's Chicago home.
