A man was shot downtown Saturday night near where thousands of people had gathered to watch the fireworks display from Navy Pier.
The man, in his late teens, lay in a pool of blood outside a condominium building in the 200 block of East Ohio about 10 p.m. and a shell casing was found nearby.
Police said the man was shot twice in the abdomen after two groups of people got into a fight on the sidewalk outside the building.
The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was listed in critical-to-serious condition, according to police and fire officials.
A person who was possibly responsible for the shooting was taken into custody, and a weapon was recovered at the scene, police said.
Karen Arenes, 26, was walking in the area from Navy Pier with her father, brother and her 6-year-old daughter when the family heard about three gunshots right ahead of them.
