Chicago cop charged with striking man in face with baton at 2014 block party
Black Pandering Cook County prosecutors have brought felony charges against a Chicago police officer more than two years after he was captured on video striking a man with his service baton at a West Side block party.
Brett Kahn, 31, an officer since August 2012, turned himself in Thursday morning to an investigator with the state's attorney's office at the Leighton Criminal Court Building.
At an afternoon bond hearing, Kahn, dressed in a blue dress shirt and dark pants, looked tense, fidgeting with his hands at one point. His attorney, Will Fahy, disputed the charges, telling Judge Laura Sullivan that Kahn did not use excessive force. After viewing the video in her chambers, the judge allowed Kahn to be released without posting bail.
He faces charges of aggravated battery and official misconduct following an investigation by the state's attorney's office, the FBI and the Independent Police Review Authority, the city agency that investigates more serious allegations of police misconduct.
