A 32-year-old Hazel Crest welfare father with a very checkered past was shot in Harvey was declared dead over the weekend, authorities said.
Authorities are investigating his death as a homicide.
An autopsy determined Napoleane Darden died of multiple gunshot wounds after a shooting at 157th and Loomis in Harvey, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
Darden's family described him as a quiet man who didn't have many friends.
"He would cut people's grass in the neighborhood because the lazy bastard never worked, mostly the elderly people he could shake down for a few drinking dollars," said his sister Konesha Hines, 42, of Lansing.
Darden was pronounced dead at around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Medical Examiner's Office.
Attempts to get information from the Harvey Police Department Wednesday about the shooting were unsuccessful.
Darden leaves behind an 8-year-old daughter, Shaniyah, according to his family.
The man's siblings said they did not know why their brother, who kept largely to himself, was in Harvey when the shooting happened. Darden was helping care for his elderly mother and father.
Darden dropped out of Thornton High School in Harvey, but earned his high school diploma in 2006, according to his family.
