A 22-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department has been relieved of his police powers pending an investigation into charges that he inappropriately touched a 15-year-old girl at the Wisconsin Dells over the summer, authorities said.
Sgt. Jose Garcia was charged in an arrest warrant from Sauk County with one count of sexual assault of a minor younger than 16. Dressed in street clothes, Garcia appeared at a hearing in Cook County on Wednesday and was ordered to surrender to authorities in Wisconsin.
Garcia is accused of inappropriately touching the girl while at a swimming pool in the Wisconsin Dells, authorities said. The arrest warrant was issued by the Sauk County sheriff’s office Oct. 3.
Garcia was relieved of his police powers Tuesday, pending the outcome of the criminal proceedings, according to Anthony Guglielmi, chief spokesman for the Chicago Police Department.
An internal investigation has been launched, and the department was cooperating with Wisconsin authorities, Guglielmi said.
The Sauk County district attorney’s office had no immediate comment.
